Eighth Commandment: You Shall Not Steal

Ben Gan // 1st Service.
Why were the commandments given?
-as guidelines
-judgement
-there was lawlessness and chaos in society

Exodus 20:15
Thou shall not steal!

What is stealing?
-to take something that is not yours.

Leviticus 6

Exodus 22
- The seriousness of stealing.

Who do we steal from?
God

  • Time (Sabbath)-Sabbath and quiet times-Excuses
  • Money (Tithes)-Not literally stealing from the offering bag-Not giving what He deserves
  • Heart (Focus)-Not going full worth to God.

Men
  • Ideas (Plagiarism)- Work
  • Time (Punctuality)- Not bein punctual and wasting other people's precious time.
  • Piracy-Downloading illegally

So why should we not steal?
John 10: 10
- Thief comes to steal kill and destroy
• Stealing causes chaos
• You do not show love and respect to others
• You are taking away someone's blessing away from them.
     -creates grief.

Stealing results in more stealing.
It is a selfish self-centred act.
It focuses on ourself.
If we don't steal, we are free to love others sincerely and honestly.

Ian Lai // 2nd Service.

Stealing in Secret

Thou shall not steal

Stealing: Taking what doesn't rightfully belong to you!

Reasons why we have this commandment

#1 To bring peace and stability to God's people.
   - Without it there will be chaos.

#2 God wants his people to prosper through honest hardwork
   -Ephesians 4:28
   -Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

#3 God himself does not steal.
   - But guess who steals? Satan.
   - Stealing   - John 10:10

We know that stealing is bad.
But stealing in the abstract is less obvious- Stealing in Secret

#1 Stealing "Accidentally"
People who borrow things and forget to return it.
   - Borrows money and things

#2 Stealing Time
Not honouring people's time.
   - Late. Late. Late. Always late.
   - Not accidentally late.
        Intentionally late!
   - Malaysian timing.

#3 Stealing name and glory
   - Gossiping, bad mouthing,
        spreading rumours.
   - Plagiarism, taking credit for what
       isn't yours
   - Copying homework and exams

#4 Stealing morality
   - Causing others to stumble
   - Indulging in Sin
   - Laughing at violence/ vulgarity/
       Sexual Immorality
   - Lead others to sin
   - Mark 9: 42

#5 Stealing from God
   - Not giving God what He deserves
   - Not giving back to God
   - Not worshipping God,
        stealing His praise!
   - Not giving our time to God.
     (Neglecting devotions and prayer)

What are you withholding that is due to Him?

The Big Picture
- God is our Provider.
- When we steal, we say;
You are not enough God. You haven't provided enough.
- If we steal can we say that it is a blessing from God?
- If we steal how does this reflect on our Heavenly Father?
- If we steal, How can God demonstrated His power in our lives.

Stealing no matter how big or small, is still stealing.

Not stealing gives us...
Freedom
-from guilt
-to enjoy God's blessings
-the fruits of our labour
-fro the thief (Satan)

Do not give a foothold to the Devil.
Choose to live right and to live according to the Word of God.
