Ninth Commandment: You Shall Not Lie

Do not bear false witness against your neighbour.

Exodus 20:16

Reputation

- It is our prized possession

- It takes a lifetime to build

- Only takes a moment to destroy it

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:30-31

Love your neighbour

- Do not give false testimony about them.

What is a Lie?

- Intentional false statement

- Saying something that isn't true

- Not saying the whole truth

- Knowing the truth but no acknowledging it

How Does God Feel About It?

There are six things the Lord hates,

    seven that are detestable to him:

17 

        haughty eyes,

        a lying tongue,

        hands that shed innocent blood,

18 

        a heart that devises wicked schemes,

        feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19 

        a false witness who pours out lies

        and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Proverbs 6:16-19

- God is the God of truth.

What is Bearing False Witness?

- False testimony.

- Deception causing someone to believe something thats a lie.

- Slander - False information that inflicts harm on someone.

- We are envious.

- We try to increase our status.

What Happens When We Bear False Witness?

- We harm others.

- We wouldn't trust one another.

- Relationships will be wrecked.

- Ruins your reputation

- Breaks our relationship with God.

Why Must We Not Bear False Witness?

- It is a commandment from God.

- If we bear false witness, we disobey God.

- We hurt God.

How Do We Stop?

- Start by being honest and telling the truth.

- Love our neighbours.

- Be rooted in Christ, do our devotions.

Conclusion

Principal: We love our God, therefore we love our neighbours.

Don't take part in: slander, deceit, gossips.

We are to praise God in Spirit and truth because when we speak the truth, we worship God.

The Freedom We Have.

- We won't hurt other people

- Free from being a liar.
