The good, the right, the true—these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours. Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it. (Eph 5:10, MSG)
Ephesians 5:1-21 describe our former life versus our present Christian life.
Whether we like it or not, when we choose to follow Christ and be part of His body here on earth, the giant spotlight of the whole world is focused on us. Our every move, every word or action is observed, evaluated, criticized or applauded. I consider that appraisal from the world to be just as important as the appraisal we will get from our Master when we eventually meet Him face to face. The conclusion our world makes will either entice them to our God or otherwise.
As such, it is imperative that each one of us observe the GOOD, the RIGHT and the TRUE. Whatever our age or status, wherever God has placed us, God expects this of us because we are now His children who are walking in the light.
GOOD brings to mind words like virtuous, enjoyable, satisfactory, pleasant or beneficial. In our homes, work places or society, we do good by giving due honour and respect to each individual that crosses our paths, regardless of colour, creed or status. As we do that, we bring down walls of hostility and distrust. And as Christians, we can do that good even as we view each person as being made in the image and likeness of our creator God (Gen 1:26). Consequently, our world becomes a more pleasant place to live in. Even the various tasks we have to do, be it great or small become enjoyable.
RIGHT reminds me of that which is precise, appropriate, proper or reasonable. A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver (Prv 25:11, NIV). We need God’s wisdom to say the right things at the right time, in the right way. In that way, our words become a source of encouragement and healing to the listeners. Our actions too need to be right and reasonable, especially so as ours is a multi-racial nation. Even within our own families or work places, we are confronted with differences in personalities, strengths and weaknesses. In such a unique setting, we Christians need to lead the way and do that which is right or reasonable.
TRUE tells me of that which is correct, genuine, faithful and spot on. Matthew 5:37 reminds us to let our ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and our ‘No’, a ‘No’. We must be true, faithful and loyal as spouses, workers and citizens.
May God help us to “figure out what will please Christ, and then do it”!
