The Ten Commandments Sermon Series: Set Free to Live Free
Second Commandment: Have No Idols.
Exodus 20: 4 - 6
- Have no other God's which includes anything made by humans or anything in nature.
- You must not make for yourself any idol or image of any kind
- Don't worship them, which includes bow, serve or trust.
- If you do, I will punish you because I am a jealous God.
( A Father who loves you, will need to punish you sometimes because He is jealous for us. )
- If you don't I will bless you
- In today's context, anything that demands our attention such that it replaces God is an idol. God hates this and it makes him angry, just like how a Father cannot bear to hear his own children call another person "dad".
- It is out of His deep love for us that He is protective and commands us to never to replace him with anyone or anything else.
Why God Gave These Commandments
1. God is a jealous God ( Exodus 20 : 5 )
- He is jealous because He loves us. If He didn't love us, He wouldn't be jealous.
- He doesn't want us to be worshipping and loving someone or something else other than Him.
He Made Us In His Image
- We're meant to reflect his image and character.
- When we worship idols, we become them.
- We become what we worship.
- Psalm 115 3:8
What Is Idolatry?
- Worship of anything that is not of God.
- If you worship idols, you are basically worshipping Satan.
What Must We Do?
- Love God and keep His commandments.
- Our response is to love him in return and be faithful to Him. And for those who do, He promises to lavish his unfailing love for a thousand generations.
- Therefore let's revisit our priorities and make God our central priority through worship, devotion, and prayer.
What Happens Then?
Exodus 20 : 6
but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
