Speaker: Ian Lai
The Ten Commandments Sermon Series: Set Free to Live Free
Fourth Commandment: Remember the Sabbath and Keep it Holy,

Have a break, have a Shabbat!

Exodus 20:8-11

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

6 days of labour, 1 day of rest.

#1: CONTEXT – DEFINITION.
Shabbat
Lit. Ceasing or stopping in Hebrew

or

Sabbath
A special day in a week where we rest or do not work.
Jewish- Friday sundown to Saturday sundown
Christians- Sunday

This commandments tells us 2 things;
-Remember the Sabbath
-Keep it Holy

Exodus 31:12-17
-if you do not observe the Sabbath, you will be put to death- (God) OT

-The Sabbath marks us as His people
-The day for us to know that He is The Lord our God
-The Sabbath, from a stifling law, becomes a call to rest.

#2: WHY HAVE THE SABBATH

- We honour the time that He's given to us.
- It's God's time in the week.
- To give Him back what He has given us.

Exodus 20:10

- But the seventh day is a Sabbath of The Lord your God. it wasn't our to begin with

Exodus 20:11
-The only commandment with an example.

- There is a blessing that comes with the Sabbath, we are blessed when we rest.

- He is our Creator, and we are made in His image. He knows what is best for us
- He knows what is best for us, and the "best" is rest for our bodies.

#3: OUR RESPONSE
Remember + Keep it Holy

i. Remember
- Because we can forget.
- The rest has to be intentional.
- It is both physical and spiritual
- Law-> Call to rest-> Call to be with Him

ii. Keep it Holy
- Because it is something that we can defile.
- A day dedicated to God. A day we set our hearts on Him
- To reflect
   HOW?
- To intentionally be with Him
- Significance that comes as the people of God coming together on this day set apart for Him
- Corporate anointing and collective blessing that comes with it.
- The Sabbath is a FULL DAY.
- A day of celebration and joy.
- Do things that give you rest and edifies your spirit.

#4: WARNING
The Sabbath is only meaningful when there is work.

Time Management
- busyness robs us of our rest, it's distracts us from what is important and what God has for it.

When We Rest:
- We take time to recover, recuperate and refresh
- We are thankful to God.
- Our lives will have balance.
- Maintains what is important that is our relationship with God.
- Brings happiness and joy.

The Sabbath:
- is about physical and spiritual rest
- brings blessing.
