Sunday Sermon Recap

Speaker: Sean Joel and Tim Koh
The Ten Commandments Sermon Series
Fifth Commandment: Honour Your Father and Your Mother

God isn’t inviting us to just a bunch of rules or laws or regulations.
He is inviting us into relationship.
He is giving us freedom and a guideline.

First 4 commandments are about God.
Next 6 are about others
and in the first commandment, God says, "Let's talk about your parents"

What comes to mind when you think of your father or mother ?
Scripture:

 Exodus 20:12
Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

Colossians 3:20
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

•The family is the smallest collective unit in the society.
-      Honoring our father and mother builds a strong foundation for a healthy family and a stable society

What, Why and How?

What does Honor mean?
-High respect
-Special merit/ Fulfill (an obligation)
-Keep (an agreement)
-It is God's will
-Esteem, value and great respect
-In Hebrew kâbêd (kaw-bade)
-means heavy, refers to the glory      of God.
- Many of us think honouring our parents is compensation for them taking care of us.

In History
-God provided for food and clothing (Deuteronomy 8:3-4)
-Parents did not feed their children
-God expects us to honour our parents; because they gave us life

Why give honor?
3Ps
1.    Proverbs 1: 8-9
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your headand a chain to adorn your neck.
Moral + Good Qualities = Being Lovable & Honorable in the sight of God of men.

2.    Proverbs 15:5 (NLT)
Only a fool despises a parent’s discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise.

3.    Proverbs 23:22-25 22
Listen to your father, who gave you lifeand do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy the truth and do not sell it—wisdom, instruction and insight as well. The father of a righteous child has great joy;a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him. May your father and mother rejoice;may she who gave you birth be joyful!

• Verse 23 says buy the truth, the word “buy” here means to obtain it at any cost.
-       The “truth” here is none other than God’s will and knowledge.
-       And when you have obtain this, do not “sell it” meaning do not take advantage and do not treat it in vain but hold on to it and guard it like treasure for the rest of your life
-       You treasure it not by locking it away like all these items but by loving and practicing the truths and knowledge God has given you. And one of it is to practice His commandments.

•Your parents would certainly rejoice in you because they’re the ones that bore and raised you. What your parents desire most of you is to be wise and righteous. The rest would come naturally.
•It is God’s will that you honour your parents. To God’s sight honouring your parents is of a great price because you are obeying his commandment and therefore honouring God.

Why Honour our parents?

•Brings honour to God
-Honouring our parents has a higher meaning
-God wants a family
-How we respect our physical parents shows our willingness to honour God.
-Jesus as an example
(Luke 2:43- 51)- Jesus was obedient.
-If we dishonour our parents, immediately dishonour God

•They deserve it
-The Bible didn't say "only if"
 It is a "command"ment

•It pleases The Lord

Col 3: 20
Eph 6: 1

•Leads to blessing

Consequences of not honouring
Prov 20: 20, 23: 22,25, 30: 17

How do we Honor our parents?
1. Give respect
•We must always respect our parents and accept them as our guardians who were given a mandate by God to teach us and care for us. We respect them by obeying them.
•Our duty as a child when we’re still in school/high school/varsity to our parents is to simply focus on our studies and to do our best, as this is what is desired from our parents.
•Because we respect them, we will obey them and carry this responsibility as their child wholeheartedly.

2. Give thanks
•Always remember to say your “thank yous” and “I love yous” this is to show your gratitude for your parents for their hard work and care for you.
•Everyone always wants to be loved and shown appreciation

3. Give Grace
•Your parents are humans just like you and I. As humans we are obviously not perfect and are bound to make mistakes and our parents are the same too.

4. Give forgiveness
•If God can do it, you can too.
•Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting, but it does mean letting go of what eats us up inside.
•To honor our parents, we must love them and if we don’t forgive them, how can we love them ?

Conclusion
•In loving God we are to obey this commandment because we are called to live a Christ like life.
•We only can live a Christ like life by following the commandments given by God.
•Honor is more than lip service. The word “honor” in this passage is a verb and, as such, demands the right actions by giving Respect, Thanks, Grace, and Forgiveness.
•With great honor comes with great obedience.
•Now, first commandment is that there’s only one God. Second commandment is we’re only to worship one God. But here, we find out that if we live in a way toward our family that is worshipful and respectful toward God, it actually has benefits for us.
•When we always do what is to God’s glory, God would bless us.
•First Commandment with a promise.
•Opposed by enemy.
•Family is a lifetime commitment.
