A Buffet-Styled Religion?

I enjoy buffets. The spread of sumptuous food from starters to desserts is often tempting and irresistible. We are often spoilt for choice in a good buffet spread and regrettably many often overeat!
In an international buffet, diners often pick and choose the cuisine which suit their taste buds. They help themselves to some dishes but do not bother to taste others. I wonder if we do that with our faith too – choosing that which we want to hear and obey, shutting our ears and closing our hearts to that which makes its demands on us. With a buffet mentality, we simply pick and choose, without the compulsion to take God’s Word in its totality.
The word of God warns us that in the last days, false Christs and deception will increase. Lawlessness will abound and the love of many will grow cold (Mt 24:4-12). And we cannot deny the evidence in our world today.
Fellow Christians, we cannot afford to deceive ourselves with a buffet-style religion. We must return to biblical basics as outlined in the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost. I believe in the holy catholic (universal) church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
Let’s choose to stand rock-solid and shoulder-to-shoulder on these essentials of our faith. When we know our Lord Jesus Christ as He is, not as we imagine Him to be, then we will be a force to be reckoned with – a force that penetrates the darkness of our world, bringing light and hope to many.
